Birds of Tarangire National Park

19 06 2016

This was my second time visiting the Northern Parks of Tanzania. This time we went with African Wildcats Expeditions, based out of Arusha. I’m pretty sure I saw as many new species (to me) as I did during my FIRST visit in 2009!
Some of the birds from Tarangire National Park, Tanzania, that I saw on my Safari in May:

1. Red-billed Firefinch (what a cool name!)

8. African Fish Eagle

By my quick count of pics from that day, I have 20 species sighted in the first day… Not a bad day.  Not bad at all, considering it’s not a bird-specific outing.

For the whole set, you can can visit my "First Day of Safari album on Flickr" at https://flic.kr/s/aHskBQKhKA

Asante Sana!

Mrs Dragonspeed needed to get rid of me for a day , so her Uncle #7 offered to show me around. We spent the day around Sai Kung.

We went out to the Kau Sai Chau Golf Course where we got in trouble for wandering around a golf course 🙂 We went on an 80 minute cruise around some local islands and we had a great seafood dinner. It was a blast!

Finches, Hummingbirds, Jays! What a great time to have a feeder

4 06 2011

Things are active around the feeders these days and the hummingbirds seem to be more tolerant of me shooting. Here are some shots from yesterday.

Went for another walk around Reifel yesterday

31 12 2010

As you can tell, the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is quickly becoming one of my favourite places to go spend 4-6 hours wandering around with a lens :)  Yesterday I went out with Mrs Dragonspeed.  She used the 100-400 most of the time while I shot with the 70-200 + 2X converter.  That  being said, I even slapped the 2X onto the 100-400 to get a couple of the shots below (1 and 5) for 800mm of manual focusing goodness on the 7D

It was forecast to be clear, and for a change the weather man was right! It was a cool clear, crisp day. It made for some good shooting. Here are a few from the walk.

Some birds from my walk around Reifel

8 12 2010

Back on Nov 28th I went for 5 hour walk around the Reifel Bird Sanctuary.  While the weatherman promised sun, it was far from it.  More like hazy overcast.  Less than ideal photography weather.

The morning started out COLD and there was frost in places.  Most of the ponds were frozen over.  Always fun to watch the mallards come in for landings on ice and slide to a stop 😉

Well, here are a few shots that turned out OK for the day – All shot with the 7D and 100-400L:

The sky was so dreary behind this poor baldy that I had to give him a nice blue gradient instead

As I was about to leave, word got out about a couple of Great Horned Owls in a tree… They were tucked up DEEP in the branches. ISO 12800 to even get a shot worth keeping!

A little marsh wren. You hear them and you see them flitting about. It was a nice change to be able to get a shot of one… My first time!
