BC Judo Championships – 2014

29 10 2014

The BC Judo Championships were held in Abbotsford, BC on October 18.  I had two of my students competing in the tournament and as usual I was there shooting pictures. It was a tough day for me, personally, as I had just re-torn my MCL in my right knee the night before… I felt a bit like someone had taken a baseball bat to my knee that morning.  I had to go, though… I told my students that I would be there to cheer/coach them on.  My club, The Burnaby Judo Club, did fairly well, although at our senior levels, there were a few let downs.  My two students had mixed result.  It was their first tournament and nerves were definitely a factor. Importantly, everyone competed hard and I’m looking forward to seeing them again in the November Tournament.

Here are a few shots from the day:

2013 Canada West Judo Tournament

16 12 2013

My Judo club hosted the 2013 Canada West Judo Tournament on Dec 7, 2013. The usual challenges of shooting in a gymnasium aside, there were some decent shots to be had.

Foggy Vancouver Mornings

25 10 2013

The past two weeks have had Vancouver, BC sitting in a temperature inversion.  Down in the city, the temperatures have been 6C in the morning while up higher in the mountains it was 13C.  Combined with moist air from the Pacific, that means low lying fog and some great photo ops!

My wife and I went up on Saturday and found that the fog ceiling was a bit too high:

Not to be deterred by that, it was time to get a bit creative.  Mount Baker silhouetted against the sunrise:

The sunrise, itself made for a nice opportunity too:

That Saturday’s set can be seen here:

On Wednesday, I dragged myself out of bed solo and headed up… got to the cypress viewpoint by 06:15…urgh, that’s early.  What a reward though!!!

When the sun started to come up the real fun began:

Wednesday was just a day of "Wow" after "Wow" as the light changed and kept presenting interesting opportunities.  Wednesday’s set can be seen in entirety here:

The King of the Beasts

While the Lion may be "The King of the Beasts" it was pretty obvious that it was the LIONESS that did the real work in the kingdom. Here are the top shots from our Tanzania Safari in 2009
